Gaussian Process Modelling – Michael Betancourt
We are very happy to announce that following “Jumping Rivers: Bayesian Inference using Stan”, Michael Betancourt, a core developer of Stan, is running a series of 5 modules for principled statistical modelling with Stan. The modules will take place between Monday 15th February, 2021, and Thursday March 18th, 2021! Michael Betancourt is a research scientist with Symplectomorphic, LLC where he develops theoretical and methodological tools to support practical Bayesian inference. Being a core developer of Stan, he implements and tests these tools on a daily basis.
This module introduces Gaussian processes as a statistical modelling technique, motivating principled prior models that avoid pathological behavior.

In regards to Stan experience, attending the following courses would be of great benefit:
- Introduction to Bayesian Inference
- Introduction to Bayesian Inference using RStan or Introduction to Bayesian Inference using PyStan (both include Introduction to Bayesian Inference)
As mentioned, the course is aimed at current Stan users and will assume familiarity with the basics of calculus, linear algebra, probability theory, probabilistic modeling and statistical inference, and Stan.
Attendees are strongly encouraged to review
